Omar Nelson Bradley Officer Research Fellowships in Mathematics

On this page, you will find information pertaining to the Omar Nelson Bradley Officer Research Fellowships in Mathematics. The Omar Nelson Bradley Foundation is authorized to disburse funds to officers of the United States Army for ten fellowships in the study of the Mathematical Sciences. These fellowships, awarded annually, are expected to be in the amount of $2000, for an annual total of $20,000.

The deadline for 2010 submissions is December 15, 2009.

Who May Apply

U.S. Army officers who are actively engaged in the Mathematical Sciences may apply for these fellowships. "Active engagement in the study" includes any activity that involves the learning of mathematics, the teaching of mathematics, or the applications of mathematics to an Army problem. Officers who have been awarded a fellowship in the past may apply again. In this case, the officer should list the contribution of any previous grant.

How to Apply

Officers meeting the criteria above should apply to the Chair, Omar Nelson Bradley Fellowships Committee. Applications should include the name, rank, duty position, and phone number of the applicant, the title of the effort, a project description which includes an overview, prior results (if any), the objective of the project, the methodology to be used, and a proposed timeline. The effort should be completed within three years. Also included in the application should be a proposed budget for the requested funding, and finally, a method of publishing or disseminating the results of the project. An example of the above is available. Whether the results are published or presented, a reference will be made that the research was funded (either fully or partially) by the Omar Nelson Bradley Fellowship. Applications will be due to the Omar Nelson Bradley Fellowships Committee by 1 January each year. Electronic applications are preferred.

Selection of the Omar Nelson Bradley Fellows

The Chair of the Omar Nelson Bradley Fellowships Committee is appointed by the Professor and Head, Department of Mathematical Sciences, United States Military Academy. This Committee Chair shall be a volunteer who serves in a capacity that is unrelated to any official U.S. Government duties he/she may have. Contact information for the Chair is found below. The committee will convene in the month of January with a goal of recommending a slate of ten proposed Omar Nelson Bradley Fellows to the Directors of the Omar Nelson Bradley Foundation, through the Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, USMA, by 1 February each year. The Directors maintain ultimate selection authority for recipients and will announce names by 1 March. The Foundation requires officer research fellows to submit reports of completed research; these reports will be collected by the Foundation.
